“Yoga and “scandal” seem to walk hand-in-hand these days…”

Nadi Madness: Three Days of Practice with John Friend

Since I’ve already written about my discomfort with the term Grace, I can now get on to talking more specifically about what the three-days of practice were like. And I will try very hard not to be too snarky! Each day, we practiced about 100 poses in four hours, beginning with 1) standing poses and [...]

Call it Devotion

I’ve mostly used this blog as a space to talk about beer–but I’m as much of a devoted yogi as I am an avid craft-beer enthusiast from now on I’ll include more yoga musings. I’m at last fully recovered from three days of four-hour practices with John Friend of Anusara Yoga last week in Encinitas. [...]

Very Belated Gifts for Yogis

I’ve already justified my belated gift-giving tradition, so here’s my list of handmade gifts from Etsy for yogis. Consider giving your favorite yogi the gift of classes (at her/his favorite studio) or a massage. Or make a donation. Treehugger has a great post on the Top Ten Best Christmas Charity Gifts. I own, I confess, [...]

Handmade Gifts for Beer-Lovers

Growing up overseas, most of our holiday packages and gifts would always arrive after Christmas–and this was never a problem, since unpredictable mail delivery and belated gifts simply extended the holiday season. I could also say something cheesy about the joy of giving gifts year round. Or I could simply admit the fact that I [...]

One Beer Monday

I like beers brewed with hemp-seeds (like Beer Valley’s Leafer Madness Imperial IPA) and I love Imperial Black IPAs (like Hop in the Dark). Dubhe Imperial Black IPA, from Unita Brewing Company, is therefore quite dreamy. The name makes me snicker a bit, but dubhe (rhymes with “tubby”) is actually the Centennial Star of Utah [...]

Gift Ideas for the Beer Connoisseur

Although I’ve been MIA in blogland these past few months, I’ve had plenty of time on the mat and have been enjoying regular craft beers (and plenty of cider, too–but more about that in a future post)! Yesterday evening, I made some fish stew with leftover Thanksgiving day ham and some Pacific rockfish. I’m almost [...]

Pumpkin pie, I can take or leave, but pumpkin beer…

Now that we’re well into September, I’m already starting to think about pumpkin beers. I feel pretty neutral about pumpkin pie, but a pumpkin beer pared with any kind of aged hard cheese (oh, let’s say a nice aged gouda) makes me happy. San Diego and southern California breweries don’t seem to make many [...]

Beyond Pliny the Elder

Today, apparantly, is international IPA day. It sounds like a bogus marketing scheme to me. Nevertheless, as a reformed IPA-hater, it’s my duty to talk about a few IPAs I’ve come to admire. I also want to help hop-heads branch out. When the Pizza Port Bottle Shop has a fresh batch of Pliny the Elder [...]

If I Drank Two of the Same Beers in a Row…

Actually it’s probably been years since I’ve had two or more of the same beer in a row. I don’t log every beer on Untappd, but, as my profile suggests, I curate my imbibing sessions like tastings. And I don’t always follow the rule of beginning with lighter beers and moving towards darker ones. I’ll [...]

Green Flash Imperial IPA. This wears its 9.4 % ABV lightly. I mean that the malts are quite subdued. Hop scent is also subdued. So, how to describe this? It’s all about texture and aftertaste. I wonder if this is an older bottle. It’s nice, but, again, more subdued than expected.

Marin Brewing Co. Point Reyes Porter. Roasty & medium chocolately-ness. This is smooth and not too boozy.

I’m in a porter mood: RCH Brewery’s Old Slug Porter is roasty and even bright and tangy. British beers tend to be cleaner and crisper than US of A versions of the same styles.

Caldera Rauch Ur Bock. This was pretty subdued for a rauch, but still definitely smokey. I’m a fan—the ultimate subtle rauch beer, if such a thing is possible.

Beer Valley Delta 9 IPA. This was a nice IPA—nothing extraordinary for the style, slightly on the bitter side, moderate grapefruity hops.
